Romanian Dead Lift (Dumbbells)
Exercise name: Romanian Dead Lift (Dumbbells)
Exercise description:
1. The Setup
Foot Position: Stand tall with your feet hip-width apart and pointing straight ahead.
Grip: Hold a dumbbell in each hand in front of your thighs using an overhand grip (palms facing your body).
Knee Setting: Unlock your knees by establishing a slight, fixed bend (about 5 degrees). Keep this angle frozen throughout the entire movement; do not bend them further.
2. Posture and Core Engagement
Pack the Lats: Pull your shoulder blades down and back to open up your chest. Imagine trying to squeeze oranges under your armpits to engage your upper back.
Brace the Core: Tighten your abdominals as if you are preparing to take a punch. Keep your head and neck aligned naturally with your spine.
3. The Downward Phase (The Hinge)
Push Hips Back: Inhale and initiate the movement by pushing your hips straight back, as if you are trying to close a car door with your glutes.
Shave the Legs: Keep your arms completely locked and let the dumbbells travel directly down the front of your thighs and shins. The weights must stay in close contact with your legs to protect your lower back.
Find Your Depth: Stop lowering the weights once you feel a strong stretch in your hamstrings or when your hips cannot travel any further back. For most people, this occurs around mid-shin height. Do not go lower if it forces your lower back to round.
4. The Upward Phase (The Drive)
Drive Through Heels: Exhale, press your feet firmly into the floor, and use your hamstrings and glutes to pull your torso back up.
Hinge Forward: Push your hips forward until you are standing completely upright.
Squeeze the Glutes: Squeeze your glutes hard at the peak of the movement. Avoid hyperextending or leaning backward at the top, as this places unnecessary stress on the spine.
Technique that must be performed to count: Lift the weight do not allow the torso to tilt or bend laterally toward the weight. Hips and shoulders must rise and fall at the same time.
# of repetitions before shooting: 10
Casual division modifier: Lighter weight or less reps
